Angelique Kerber tops Jelena Ostapenko to reach her second Wimbledon final

Angelique Kerber

The 36-year-old Williams, who did not play Wimbledon last year while taking a leave of absence to have her first child, reached a Grand Slam final for the 12th straight season by beating Julia Goerges 6-2, 6-4 at the All England Club on Thursday.

"I don't have anything to lose and I feel I can play so free". I think that's what I was doing in the past, I was limiting myself. She played so brilliantly, moving around the court so well and hitting with such power that at some point, we stopped thinking about her as a woman overcoming improbable odds and instead started expecting the results of a player who won six of the previous 10 Grand Slams she contested before announcing to the world she was pregnant.

That's not the case.

Angelique Kerber, the 2016 Australian Open and U.S. Open victor, beat 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3 in Thursday's early semifinal.

The 11th-seeded Kerber beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal on Centre Court on Thursday. Williams has won all four of their encounters.

It was clear right from the opening game of Angelique Kerber's Wimbledon semifinal how things were going to go.

Kerber did not dictate much, content to let 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko determine the outcome of almost every point.

Serena Williams is into the Wimbledon final.

The left-handed Kerber was mainly a passive participant in the early going against Ostapenko.

A jubilant Williams was back giving the crowd a one-arm raised victory twirl after reaching a 10th Wimbledon final when her opponent swiped a lob behind the baseline. Williams broke for a 4-2 lead in the second when Goerges tried a rare drop shot that caught the top of the net tape and fell on her side. "In case no one's told you yet today, I want to remind you that you are greater than your circumstances", she wrote two days out, as if aware she was building up to something worth commemorating. Yes, it's her 30th title match at any major. "It came from the palace that she is coming on Saturday".

Eventually, Kerber's style ruled the day.

The American nearly bagged an early break despite Gorges racing to a 40-0 lead in her first service game. Or, more to the point on this afternoon, how such a stinging serve and big groundstrokes didn't help her avoid first-round exits each of the past five years at Wimbledon.
