Judge Kavanaugh Will Take a Sledgehammer to Justice Kennedy's LGBTQ Rights Legacy

US President Donald Trump congratulates his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

The same Red-State Democrats who voted for Gorsuch will likely also vote for Kavanaugh.

Yale Law School Dean Heather Gerken praised President Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, calling him a "longtime friend" and someone she has "admired".

Democrats, including Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin, are anxious Kavanaugh could try to weaken the Affordable Care Act and abortion rights should he be confirmed to the bench.

While Kavanaugh, 53, was framed as the more "establishment" conservative pick of the other candidates, various Republicans had phoned Trump last week to voice their objections over his potential nomination, including about a 2011 opinion where he declined to rule the Obamacare health insurance mandate as unconstitutional.

Baldwin is considered to be one of the most liberal Democrats running for reelection this year in a state carried by the president.

"President Trump vowed he'd never let the NRA down, and with the Kavanaugh pick, he chose someone whose judicial record demonstrates a risky view of the Second Amendment that elevates gun rights above public safety". It will be too hard to explain to Democratic voters why they cast the votes that confirmed a nominee too "radical" for Susan Collins, and a nominee who will move the Supreme Court to the right.

Kavanaugh wrote a dissenting opinion in the 2011 case Heller v. District of Columbia, in which his two colleagues upheld a D.C. law banning most semi-automatic rifles. In a Washington Post article with the subtle headline "Democrats' bogus argument about what the GOP said on election-year Supreme Court vacancies", Aaron Blake reports numerous examples of Sen.

"I have no doubt that many members of Congress and outside groups will announce how they stand on the nominee before doing their due diligence and instead just take a partisan stance-but that isn't how I work", her statement read.

Chris W. Cox, Executive Director of the NRA, said: " "President Trump has made another outstanding choice in nominating Brett Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court. Kavanaugh, who graduated from Yale Law School in 1990, worked as a clerk for Kennedy.

Democrats hope two Republicans who back abortion rights, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, will vote against the nominee.

I do. That's not to say it won't be hard. At the event, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that he will fight the nomination "with everything I've got".

"Well, I don't think anybody is going to overturn Roe v. Wade", Hatch told Judy Woodruff on "PBS NewsHour". And since 1930, no Supreme Court nominee has lost a confirmation vote when the president's party controlled the Senate. A slate of progressive senators and 2020 White House hopefuls, including Sens.
