IL cop resigns after dispute over Puerto Rican shirt

A Chicago man is accused of harassing a woman wearing a shirt of the Puerto Rican flag in a Cook County Forest Preserve after a viral video showed the confrontation. A forest preserve police officer is seen only in the background of a video above of

The incident drew outrage among many for the inaction of a Forest Preserve police officer, who watched the attack and did not step in to stop it. Patrick Conner, the officer in question, resigned this week after being placed on desk duty.

He was first charged with the misdemeanor after he was caught on camera accosting Mia Irizarry at a Cooks County Forest Preserve picnic area in June.

Irizarry said she received an apology from the forest preserve shortly after she posted the video. The video shows him approaching her, asking why she is wearing a v-neck Puerto Rican flag shirt with the words "Puerto Rico" written below the neckline.

"You should not be wearing that shirt in the United States of America".

Irizarry, who was at the park with friends for a birthday party, can be heard on the video telling Trybus that she is indeed an American citizen.

At one point in the video, Irizarry tries to move away from Trybus and walks out from under a pavilion, but he follows her as Connor appears not to approach them.

Irizarry asked why Connor would tell her brother to get back while allowing the aggressive outsider to continue to approach Irizarry and insult her.

Prosecutors are considering whether to file hate crime charges in the case, Cook County state's attorney's spokeswoman, Tandra Simonton, said Thursday. An officer is seen in the background, but doesn't appear to intervene when the situation escalates.

Timothy Trybus, 62, originally faced misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct charges for the incident where he angrily confronted the woman and told her she "shouldn't be wearing that" - referring to the shirt.

'That officer did absolutely nothing he did absolutely zero, ' she says in the clip.

A second officer eventually arrives to speak to Trybus.

The woman, who apparently is the one recording the encounter, can be heard talking but her face is not shown.

At the same conference, the forest preserve district police chief said the officer "should've stepped in". "Are you a United States citizen?" he screamed, referring to the shirt as "un-American".

Meanwhile an investigation into the incident continues despite the officer's resignation.

The video even got the attention of Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosello, who said he was "appalled, shocked, and disturbed by the officer's behavior". The video, posted on Facebook, has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.

'We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background.

Tamara Cummings, general counsel for the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council said about the deplorable incident: "The video does not look good, but anybody who is a football fan knows that the video does not tell the whole story". Spencer, speaking about America, told the Los Angeles Times in 2016: "We live in a multi-cultural country where now, European Americans are being dispossessed". "People have just as much right to be here as you and, when you're drunk, you don't belong here".
