Illinois cop off beat after dispute over Puerto Rican shirt

Man arrested after harassing woman as un American for wearing Puerto Rico flag shirt

It started going off the rails when a man approached her asking her why she was wearing a sleeveless Puerto Rico flag shirt, which also had "Puerto Rico" written below the neckline. The bigot is so deeply ignorant that he didn't know Puerto Ricans are American citizens.

As he gets more belligerent and comes toward her, Irizarry tries to get a nearby officer with the Cook County Forest Preserves force to help her.

"Why are you wearing that?" the man points to Irizarry in Facebook Live footage she captured, while repeatedly demanding to know her citizenship status.

Irizarry is standing in a picnic area, which she tells the officer she has a permit for to attend a birthday party.

"The world is not gonna change the United States of America".

The man proceeds to ask Irizarry whether she is a United States citizen and Irizarry replies that she is.

'Are you educated?' Trybus asks her in the clip.

When the policeman didn't respond, Irizarry says, "Officer, I feel highly uncomfortable".

Irizarry then explained to the officer that the situation began when she requested that the group move since she had a permit.

Irizarry responds that she is wearing the shirt "because I can" and explains that Puerto Rico is part of the United States.

Apparently, another bystander eventually called police and more officers arrived to deal with the man.

"All people are welcome in the Forest Preserves of Cook County and no one should feel unsafe while visiting our preserves", the post said. The agency tweeted Monday that an investigation of the officer is ongoing.

As more police arrive, Irizarry tells them she still doesn't feel safe as the man continues his tirade.

"Because I can", she answered, before appealing to the police to intervene, saying she had rented some of the park's outdoor seating. "Can you please grab him?" to which he turns his head and walks in the opposite direction.

On Tuesday, forest police officials promised swift discipline for Connor.

"We take such incidents seriously, and if the investigation confirms the officer did not take appropriate steps to ensure public safety, disciplinary action will follow". The officer is seen turning the other way.

Gov. Rossello wrote on Twitter that he is "appalled, shocked & disturbed by the officer's behavior..." Another officer instructs Trybus to sit at a different table, while officers talk to a man who appears to be a friend or acquaintance of Trybus. "Now that I see what's going on, at no time was he going to attack you, he's just a big mouth", Connor says.

She said she had spoken with Rosselló, telling him the behavior in the video "does not represent our values in Cook County". From 1917, Puerto Rican residents have been US citizens and have the ability to vote in USA presidential primaries, though not in presidential elections.

Rossello added that Cook County is home to a diverse population and he believes Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will handle the incident properly.

"In this case, a USA citizen questions the citizenship of another U.S. citizen and American law-enforcement just sits back and watches", he said.
