Last two Blockbusters in Alaska are closing

A Blockbuster video store is seen

The Blockbusters in Anchorage and Fairbanks will close for rentals after Sunday night and open again on Tuesday to sell videos.

According to an Associated Press report published by KATU, the Anchorage Blockbuster store had tried to shake things up in May, when comedian and TV host John Oliver sent a jockstrap Russell Crowe wore in the 2005 boxing biopic Cinderella Man.

"It's going to be insane", Daymude said of the temporary reopening.

But it wasn't enough to counter a planned lease increase at both Alaska locations.

The closures leave just one store standing in the USA, in Bend, Oregon.

It's been a slow death for Blockbuster, the once-ubiquitous video rental store that faced its end at the hands of streaming services such as Netflix and rental kiosks like Redbox. Oliver showcased it all on the show, and revealed that "Last Week Tonight" paid $7,000 for the jockstrap.

"It's always kind of a kick in the trousers every time we close a store", said Payne.

Alaska had always been - I always thought they'd outlast us. One location on DeBarr Road in Anchorage and another store in Fairbank will be closing down on Monday.

Blockbuster managed to survive the onslaught of video streaming in Alaska because of poor internet service compared to the rest of the U.S. Harsh weather conditions would often cut the Internet connection. The sole remaining store will be in Bend, Oregon.

If you decide to make the pilgrimage to Bend to visit the last Blockbuster, can you pick us up some Twizzlers, Sour Patch Kids, and a copy of "I Know What You Did Last Summer?"

The company, which once boasted almost 10,000 locations in the USA, was founded by Waste Management founder and former Florida Marlins owner Wayne Huizenga, who passed away earlier this year. Some in more remote, less populated parts of the state began closing in the early 2000s. "It just seems a little insane". In what might come as a huge relief, she said, "We have no plans on closing anytime soon".
