Donald Trump threatens government shutdown over immigration, border security

The president touted his sticking points on border security in a tweet on Monday morning, where he also pushed to have his wall built faster.

"I know he's frustrated - and I am, too - that we haven't taken steps to adequately deal with border security, but we've got an orderly appropriations process going through here", Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said Monday. "That's why I was surprised to see [Trump's shutdown comments] because we've made more progress, more quickly this year than in many years".

On the other side of the aisle, Rep.

Rep. Steve Stivers of OH, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, the campaign arm for GOP House candidates, also said he doesn't think a shutdown would happen.

"But we're going to get the wall, even if we have to think about closing up the country for a while".

Trump's declaration on Twitter surprised some lawmakers who have been eager to avoid a bruising funding fight and highlighted his intense desire to make progress on signature agenda items that have stalled.

CRTV host Michelle Malkin said that Congressional Republicans looking to retain power are standing in the way of President Trump's border security demands.

Mr Trump also wants changes to legal immigration, including scrapping a visa lottery programme.

Congress has given the president some wall funding but far from the $25 billion he has requested.

It's the latest sign that the President's own party is learning to adapt - or simply ignore - Trump's sporadic legislative impulses. And Democrats don't want to give any kind of down payment for the border wall without a guarantee for Dreamers, the illegal immigrants who came to the country as children.

In another tweet, Trump warned of "consequences" for those who cross the border without documentation, seemingly blaming the parents of migrant children who have been separated and detained at the border.

A wall on the southern border has been a rallying cry for Trump since he launched his presidential campaign when he said he would build the barrier but Mexico would pay for it.

Some Republican lawmakers doubted the government would be forced to shut down. But Democratic solidarity over the matter did not last long, and they backed down quickly. They backed down quickly. They do, however, have the strength to derail legislation in the closely divided Senate. Trump threatened at the time to veto the spending agreement, but eventually signed the bill while expressing his displeasure with Congress.

Trump has come under intense criticism for his zero-tolerance immigration policy, which prioritises prosecutions of people who enter the U.S. illegally. McConnell canceled most of his chamber's recess to give senators time to work on the annual spending bills.

Pedestrians pass in front of a section of a US-Mexico border wall in Tijuana.

House Republicans are trying to appropriate $5 billion to begin construction of the wall, a figure Trump has endorsed.

From there, the show went on to talk about how much murder there is in Mexico. "I would meet with Iran if they wanted to meet", he said. He did acknowledge, however, that the border funding issue was unlikely to be resolved before the November midterm elections.
