PM Modi may attend Imran Khan’s oath ceremony in Pakistan

Elections agency says Imran Khan won Pakistan's election, but needs a coalition

He met with representatives of other losing parties to decide on a protest strategy.

The global media has carried several stories of Khan's path to office being facilitated even before the polls and now election monitors and human rights groups have also suggested that local media was under pressure not to scrutinise the process, which is now being questioned.

A European Union team monitored the balloting and its leader Michael Gahler said, "Overall, the election results are credible".

Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar said India welcomed that the people of Pakistan have reposed their faith in democracy through general elections.

"Remember, they grew up on this narrative of a corrupt Pakistan being damaged and needing a new leadership..."

Nearly-finalised results also indicated religious parties that fielded more candidates than ever before failed to win any National Assembly seats. If the PTI decides to nominate him again for the previous office, he will also have to vacate the NA seat which means that the party's seats will be reduced to 109.

Moreover, he added: "Imran Khan received the majority votes in the general elections so he should be the one forming the government".

But as the Pakistani military cooperates with the United States, it is unclear whether Khan will continue to criticize a Donald Trump-led Washington.

In his call to Khan, Modi hoped that "Pakistan and India will work to open a new chapter in bilateral ties". Khan has been critical of the US military involvement in Afghanistan and drone strikes against militants in Pakistan.

Khan will face myriad challenges, including militant extremism, an economic crisis with speculation that Pakistan will have to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund, water shortages and a booming population.

He was a fierce critic of the USA war on terror, particularly the country's use of drone strikes in Pakistan, which targeted terrorist networks but also killed Pakistani civilians.

In other areas, the commission said, "polling staff appeared to be biased toward a certain party", without naming the party.

"The core committee of Tehreek-i-Insaf is considering inviting the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) heads including Mr Modi and a decision on this is expected shortly", a leader of Khan's party told PTI.

For the last 35 years, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), an ethnic Muhajir party, has ruled Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, with an iron fist.

According to media reports, the independent candidates were made to sign an affidavit to promise that they would support the PTI candidates for the top positions in Punjab and the federal government.
