Mars Close Approach: How to view the celestial event

Mars is now the closest to Earth than it has been in 15 years

Earth takes roughly a year (or 365.25 days, to be exact) to complete a revolution around the sun, while Mars does it in 1.88 years (approximately 687 days). That was the closest in 60,000 years, and that kind of range won't happen again until the year 2287.

The Red Planet shines its brightest between July 27th and 30th as the Sun, Earth, and Mars all line up, with Earth sandwiched in the middle of the other two. During opposition, a planet will appear larger than usual, and its brightest colours are visible. One of the possible ways to make Mars similar to Earth is to release the carbon dioxide deposits in order to create an atmosphere and warm the planet.

The planet Mars, the only planet whose surface we can see using ground based telescopes (except for tiny Mercury) is coming closer to the earth on 31st of July 2018 after 15 years.

"We are encouraging a wide range of people to come up with innovative designs for how they envision a habitat on Mars", said Dr. Lex Akers, dean of the Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology at Bradley University, NASA's partner in the challenge. Accordingly, both planets were the closest 15 years ago, in 2003, with only 56 million kilometers in between.

This phenomenon is expected to occur next in 2034. Astronomer James Durbano from Big Sky Astronomical Society has given us some tips on how we can observe the Red Planet on this very special night. The "red star" will be visible for much of the night.

If you're looking through binoculars or a telescope, you will not be able to see the detail you normally do on the planet's surface; there's a massive dust storm obscuring most planetary details right now.

NASA has captured many images of the planet-wide dust storm that has been affecting Mars since June this year. Since Mars is not as close to the Sun as Earth, scientists appraise a Carbon dioxide weight like Earth's aggregate environmental weight is expected to raise temperatures enough to take into consideration stable fluid water.

This doesn't necessarily mean that the dream of living on Mars is dead, but it does suggest that the Red Planet's most important industry could be selling and maintaining reliable spacesuits.

You can even look back at some of the views from Mars' closest point in a webcast that filmed the event live from the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.
