President Trump open to 'no preconditions' Iran meeting

Donald Trump

USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo told reporters he was on board with the president's invitation, saying Mr Trump "wants to meet with folks to solve problems".

U.S. President Donald Trump says he would "certainly meet" with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani if the Iranian leader was willing, adding he would do it with "no preconditions".

Trump's offer of talks came only days after he effectively threatened Iran in a tweet addressed to President Hassan Rouhani and said, "You will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before".

An adviser to Rouhani said Tuesday, though, the Iranian leader would mandate a us return to the landmark nuclear pact, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as a requirement for any discussions. Roughly one year ago, Bolton - not yet serving in his current post - unveiled a detailed plan on how the U.S. should leave the Iran nuclear deal. The US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement, which included other major world powers, including Germany, France, the UK, Russia and China.

No U.S. president has met with an Iranian leader since Washington cut diplomatic relations with Tehran a year after the 1979 revolution that toppled the Shar, a U.S. ally.

On Monday, he said that he would be willing to meet Rouhani without preconditions to discuss how to improve relations.

Shortly before the tweet, Rouhani had addressed Trump in a speech, saying that hostile US policies could lead to "the mother of all wars". "No preconditions. If they want to meet, I'll meet", Trump said in a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. Any time they want. "It was a ridiculous deal", said Trump.

"If they want to meet, we'll meet", Mr Trump said. Mohammad Ali Jafari, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards, said: "The Iranian people will never allow their officials to meet and negotiate with the Great Satan, we are not North Korea".

Iranian Vice-President Eshagh Jahangiri said the government and the central bank would unveil a new economic plan by the end of this week to tackle the US sanctions and the rial's fall.

"It seems natural that we turn down his offer with regard to bitter experiences we learned from pervious negotiations with America and its repetitive breaches of obligations", added Karrazi who was Iran's foreign minister from 1997 to 2005 under the Khatami administration. Iran had showed its openness to dialogue in the past, particularly with the phone call between Rouhani and Trump's predecessor Barack Obama in 2013.

The President and his senior officials have ramped up the rhetoric against Tehran, promising to "crush" its economy with global sanctions and accusing it of fomenting terrorism and regional instability, while telling the country's citizens that their leaders are corrupt. But they also made it clear they won't be able to force their companies to keep doing business with Iran, since it could break the sanction rules and, thus, cut the companies off from the USA financial system. Back then, all 20 countries that were importing Iranian crude received waivers from the sanctions, in exchange for gradually reducing the imports.

Earlier Tuesday, a USA official said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had no intention of meeting his Iranian counterpart at an worldwide gathering this weekend in Singapore.

And Iran's OPEC governor, Hossein Kazempour Ardebili, said that Trump had been bamboozled into imposing sanctions on the country.
