Manafort jury hears of lavish spending on luxury clothes

Paul Manafort trial offers glimpse into what Robert Mueller actually has in his investigation

Manafort has been charged with tax evasion and filing false loan documents. He pleaded guilty in February to conspiring against the United States and lying to investigators.

"Mueller's lead prosecutor in this case, Andrew Weissmann, is working hard to make sure that happens", Tucker Carlson said.

Manafort attended a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians that is a focal point of Mueller's probe.

But Manafort's connection to the Trump campaign, which he managed for five months in 2016, has filled the courtroom with reporters and the internet with readers. They also highlighted the fact that Wald has never had direct contact with Manafort.

The judge in Manafort's trial told prosecutors not to use the word "oligarch" to describe wealthy Ukrainians who paid millions to the former Trump campaign chairman.

The trial is the first courtroom test for special counsel Robert Mueller, who was tasked a year ago with investigating Russia's efforts to sway the 2016 election and to determine whether the Trump campaign was involved.

Russian Federation has denied interfering in the election. An acquittal would support efforts by Trump and his allies to portray the investigation as a "witch hunt".

"Looking back on history, who was treated worse, Alfonse Capone, legendary mob boss, killer and Public Enemy Number One' or Paul Manafort, political operative & Reagan/Dole darling, now serving solitary confinement - although convicted of nothing?"

The prosecution said on Wednesday it was moving ahead of schedule and meant to rest its case sometime next week. Katzman noted Alan Couture had about 40 regular clients, and that Manafort was the only one who paid for his goods by worldwide wire transfer.

When the prosecution attempted to continue the line of questioning, asking Katzman to add up the total amount Manafort spent at his store, the judge cut it off.

Manafort was indicted along with Gates in Mueller's wide-ranging investigation, but he is the only American charged to opt for a trial instead of cooperating with the government.

Mr. Trump's current lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani told CNN on Monday that Mr. Manafort doesn't know anything that would be useful to the Mueller investigation. It took him a while to flip through a book of exhibits - invoice after invoice.

"There are errors again with our company name and zip code", he said.

But when they tried to submit into evidence photos of the suits, U.S. District Judge Judge T.S. Ellis III reprimanded them.

On multiple occasions, Ellis chastised the government for trying to display evidence of Manafort's wealth.

This trove includes what appears to be the $15,000 jacket made of Ostrich that was referenced by the prosecution in opening statements Tuesday. In fact, at the outset of the day, Ellis even banned the word "oligarch" from the courtroom in reference to people Manafort dealt with during his work in Ukraine and Russian Federation, saying the word had "come to have a pejorative meaning".

"Of course, there will be no evidence about that", the judge said, adding that oligarchs are merely rich people.

Prosecutors said on Wednesday they planned to wrap up with testimony from two more vendors on Thursday before calling people who worked as bookkeepers and accountants for Manafort.

He relied on a team of financial experts to keep track of the millions of dollars he earned from his Ukrainian political work and to ensure that that money was being properly reported, said attorney Thomas Zehnle.

Defense lawyers have painted Gates as an untrustworthy business partner who embezzled funds from Manafort's consulting firm.

"The defense side is pointing to Gates.as they should", the former DOJ prosecutor said.

"He may testify, he may not", Asonye said. "Now, we're not sure what the emails are going to say, but they've got lots of emails", the former DOJ prosecutor said.
