Zimbabwe Election: Ruling ZANU-PF Leading with Majority Parliamentary Seats

Zimbabwe election results Could the opposition party win

The BBC's Shingai Nyoka reports that the announcement on the presidential poll was not made because representatives of some of the 23 candidates had failed to turn up to verify the results. "The strategy is meant to prepare Zimbabwe mentally to accept fake presidential results".

Mnangagwa was allegedly involved in violence and intimidation during the 2008 elections when then opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the run-off after attacks claimed the lives of at least 200 of his supporters.

Three people were killed, state broadcaster ZBC said.

"Opposition parties have never enjoyed the freedom of meeting their supporters the way they have been doing‚ so they have perhaps misinterpreted our understanding to being weak‚" he said.

The ZEC said it now expected to start announcing presidential election results from Thursday because there were allegations of disputes around tallies that were posted outside polling stations.

Races in some constituencies were so close that they could have gone to the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), had it not been split between Nelson Chinamasa's MDC Alliance and Thokozani Khupe's MDC-T.

In Harare, the contrast could not be stronger with November, when hundreds of thousands filled the streets, hugging soldiers and celebrating their role in ousting 94-year-old Mugabe, the only leader Zimbabwe had known since independence in 1980.

The opposition has spoken of vote-rigging, saying results were not posted outside a fifth of the country's almost 11,000 polling stations.

In an indication of the growing tension, a crowd of about 100 MDC supporters gathered outside a Harare hotel where election results were being announced but police blocked the entrance to the building, a Reuters witness said.

The results of the race are expected on Saturday and the European Union mission says a more detailed statement on how the election results were handled will be released soon. "No amount of results manipulation will alter your WILL". But there was no response from the MDC Alliance leader, who claimed several times on Twitter to have "won the popular vote" but provided no numbers or concrete evidence of fraud by the ruling ZANU-PF party.

The House of Assembly of Parliament has 210 seats and ZANU-PF would need to win 30 more to have a two-thirds majority that would allow it to change the constitution at will. "We have won this one together".

This has been seen as a pivotal election for Zimbabwe, with citizens expressing hope for change after years of economic malaise and political oppression under Mugabe. Another opposition party, National Patriot Front (NPF) won 1 and an independent candidate also took one.

Parliamentary poll results indicate a majority win for Zanu PF.

Vote counting began at polling stations across the country after polls closed Monday evening.

"It seems the results so far could indicate the will of the people, especially the rural population, to be ruled by ZANU-PF", said Ruhanya.
The uncertainty about the results had triggered fears among opposition activists that the government or the military could refuse to cede power if the Zanu-PF was defeated.
