Trump marks Kelly's one-year mark as departure rumors swirl

Scaramucci CNN reporter was doing her job

Trump reportedly sounded out friends about possible replacements for Kelly, while the former Marine general talked about retirement from the White House.

CNBC reported on Tuesday that Mulvaney and Ayers remain in the mix to replace Kelly at some point, and that Trump could also consider Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin or U.S. Representative Mark Meadows for the role.

Another senior official told ABC News that the internal conversations about Kelly's future in the administration have been ongoing for several weeks and that the president and Kelly came to the agreement as previous tensions lessened.

Kelly was brought on in July 2017 to impose order on a chaotic West Wing, replacing Reince Priebus. The Associated Press reports that Kelly has told staffers he has agreed to stay on.

However, the President applauded Kelly on Monday, tweeting a photo of the pair together.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff".

"Congratulations to General John Kelly". As a chief with no background in politics, he'll likely be responsible for running White House operations while Trump focuses on his re-election campaign.

A source speaking to the Wall Street Journal said that "the plan" was to have Kelly remain until 2020 but that it could always change.

Asked in June about the speculation surrounding Kelly's future, Trump said the two were "getting along very well".

Trump and Kelly have privately argued at times and complained about one another to confidants.
