Virat Kohli century means England pay high price for dropped catches

Indian Test triumphs in England Part 6 Ajinkya Rahane Ishant Sharma lord it over at Lord’s

India needed just 10 balls on the second day to end England's innings, that slipped from a comfortable 216/3 to 287.

Sam Curran produced a sensational spell of swing bowling as England fought back in the first Specsavers Test against India at Edgbaston.

Ashwin picked 4/60 on Wednesday, which are his best figures in Test cricket across South Africa, England and Australia as India reduced England to 285/9 at the end of first day's play. "The game is very finely poised now".

"It was an easy drop with Kohli on 21". India were reduced to 100/5 and it was on Kohli to show some resistance and he did exactly that.

Kohli's last trip to England was not a success.

Well, he scored 134 in 10 innings in 2014, and now, he has slammed 149 in only one innings to not only mute his detractors but also drag India along to gain parity against the hosts.

This time, however, feels different.

It was not an easy start for Kohli. The contest between "the master with the bowl" James Anderson and "champion with the bat" Virat had been awaited and built up for four years.

After Malan put down a tough one-handed chance at second slip, Kohli settled then targeted Curran, first clipping him through mid-wicket then angling him down to third man.

Kohli, on the other hand, played a very watchful knock as he looked determined to go big in England.

He removed his wedding ring from around his neck and kissed it - a nod to his wife, Anushka, who was blamed for his poor form in 2014 - before he took the attack to England.

Kohli dismissed the England skipper for 70 with a direct hit - a brilliant bit of fielding at square leg - and then celebrated with a "mic drop" in retaliation to Root's own in clinching the preceding one-day series between the two teams. That left Kohli and Co. on 100 for four. I think it was an outstanding effort from them also. "OK, I'll stick around'". With scores of 40, 49*, 167, 81, 62 and 6* in his last 6 innings, Kohli looked set for yet another huge knock and the right-hander delivered with an impressive 235 in the first innings to take India's total over 600.

Two more Indian batsmen departed, with Ben Stokes taking the wickets of Ajinkya Rahane (15) and Dinesh Karthik (0) in consecutive overs, but Kohli just about survived. He is the swiftest player to reach the milestone and slammed the previous best by Brian Lara who got to the milestone in 164 innings.

During the lunch interval the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Jos Buttler had gone to hospital to have an x-ray on his left middle finger.

Though India limped to 76 for three at lunch, the post-lunch session bought no respite with all rounder Stokes picking up two wickets to reduce the visitors to 100-5.

India got off to a flier. And I had total clarity that we are going for the target.
