Israeli airforce targets militants in Syrian-held Golan Heights

UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria

Assad told his troops on Wednesday they were close to victory after inflicting a succession of defeats on fighters.

A Syrian offensive in the country's south has resulted in IS-affiliated groups scattering in the area, Conricus said.

During their summit in Helsinki, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump said they were exploring ways to protect Israel from the war in Syria.

Israel said it destroyed weapons depots, rocket launchers, logistics sites, observation posts, and intelligence centers used by Iran's Revolutionary Guards Quds Forces in Syria. They didn't elaborate but later Putin said he agreed with Trump on securing Israel's border with Syria in line with the 1974 deal.

Conricus said there had been no coordination with Syria or Russian Federation before the strike, adding that Israel was well within the bounds of a 1974 ceasefire agreement for the area in carrying it out.

Asked whether Israel should be less wary of possible flare-ups on the Golan - much of which it seized from Syria in a 1967 war and annexed in a move not recognised overseas - Lieberman said: "I believe so".

Lieberman said Israel will have "no cause to intervene or operate in Syrian territory" if Damascus respects the 1974 disengagement agreement between the two sides - and as long as Syria doesn't become a staging ground for Iranian forces to attack Israel or transfer arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Many of those armed opposition groups have joined the Syrian government in recent weeks to fight extremist groups such as IS and Jabhad An Nusra, Rudskoi said.

But the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) left the area several years ago as ISIS and rebel groups seized territory there.

Four of the militants were killed, with no Israeli soldiers injured. They were believed to be fleeing the Syrian army of President Bashar Assad.

A series of blistering offensives backed by Moscow and Tehran has forced the rebels out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's government back in control of almost two-thirds of the country.

Israel seized 1,200 sq km of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the worldwide community.
