North Korea tops Pompeo agenda at Asia security meeting

The North Korea flag flutters next to concertina wire at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur

Pence attended a repatriation ceremony at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where 55 caskets of presumed troop remains were unloaded from military planes and placed on stanchions at the air base.

When North Korea delivered the remains to members of the United Nations Command in Korea on Jul. 27, the coffins were wrapped in UN flags, Efe reported.

During their meeting in Singapore, the first ever between sitting leaders of their respective countries, both Kim and Trump committed to recovering the remains of USA service members who died during the Korean War and whose bodies were never found. It typically uses bones, teeth and DNA to identify remains along with any items that may have been found with remains like uniforms, dog tags and wedding rings.

The remains had been transferred from the small boxes they arrived in on Friday into full-sized caskets, draped with United Nations flags.

Sixteen other United Nations member countries fought alongside US service members on behalf of South Korea.

There are thousands of Americans who remain unaccounted for after the war, which began when the North invaded the South in 1950.

Trump thanked him for "fulfilling a promise" to send back US remains and said it was a step in the right direction following their summit.

A USA military aircraft left North Korea last week carrying 55 boxes handed over by Kim Jong Un's regime that are believed to contain the remains of US service members.

The remains were then moved in grey vans to an airfield where US and South Korean soldiers loaded them one by one into transport planes.

"The fact of the matter is that a year ago, on President Trump's watch, North Korea made significant advances in its ballistic missile technology, achieving what many experts agree is a nuclear-capable operational ICBM", Menendez added. As we wrote last week quoting the 38 North monitoring site, the North has reportedly begun dismantling that facility, which was used in part to test new liquid-fuel rocket engines.

The ministry said last week it plans to reduce guard posts and equipment along the heavily fortified border as an initial step.

North Korea "will be in the room and there will certainly be discussions about denuclearization", one senior State Department official said Tuesday.

This spring, however, Trump took a vastly different approach in his dealings with his North Korean counterpart, leading to the "epochal" summit in Singapore in which North Korean denuclearization was agreed upon. Trump later suspended annual military drills with South Korea which North Korea had long called an invasion rehearsal.

The cases were examined by American experts who concluded they were likely to be American, and likely Korean War combatants.

"I know President Trump is grateful that Chairman Kim kept his word, and we see today as tangible progress in our efforts to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula", Pence said.

At a Senate hearing last week, Pompeo refuted claims that the US was being played by North Korea.

A series of US-North Korean recovery efforts, termed "joint field activities", between 1996 and 2005 yielded 229 caskets of remains, of which 153 have been identified, according to the Pentagon.

The Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.
