Maduro unharmed after drone 'attack' with explosives: Venezuela government

Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro survived an assassination attempt after several drones exploded near him while he was giving a speech in Caracas, Venezuela's capital.

Rodriguez said Maduro is safe and unharmed but that seven people were injured.

Seconds later Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, looked up to the sky and winced after apparently hearing an unidentified sound.

Video from NTN24 TV channel shows Mr Maduro looking upwards, startled, during his speech. The audio then cut off. Dozens of soldiers were seen running away before the broadcast was halted.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro watches a military parade in May. The government blamed the attack on Colombia and the USA state of Florida, which is inhabited by many exiled Venezuelans.

The government says the event was a celebration to mark the 81st anniversary of the country's National Guard.

However, some media reports say the government's version of the events are not true.

Maduro added that some of those who financed the attack are in Miami and that he hoped President Donald Trump is "willing to fight the terrorist groups".

Maduro said it was "an attempt to kill me, they have tried to assassinate me today".

Maduro said "everything points" to a right-wing plot that initial investigation suggested was linked to Colombia and the US state of Florida, where many Venezuelan exiles live.

Leftist Maduro, who replaced President Hugo Chavez after his death in 2013, has linked the attack to Colombia and the U.S. Three local authorities said there had been a gas tank explosion inside an apartment near Maduro's speech where smoke could be seen streaming out of a window.

Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have fled due to food and medicine shortages and hyperinflation that could reach one million percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Rodriguez accused the country's right-wing opposition of carrying out the attack.

This year, Maduro brought forward to May presidential elections that - after they were boycotted by the opposition and key opposition figures were declared ineligible - handed him a new six-year term.
