Tsunami warning issued after natural disaster strikes near Lombok

Tsunami warning issued after magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocks Indonesia, tourist hotspot Bali

A POWERFUL natural disaster rocked Indonesia's Lombok today, sending people running from their homes and triggering a tsunami alert, just a week after a quake killed 17 people on the holiday island. Its epicentre was about 2 km east-southeast of Loloan.

The agency issued an early warning for a possible tsunami.

The latest quake, which triggered a brief tsunami warning, also shook neighboring Bali island.

Indonesia's agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics issued a tsunami warning just minutes after the natural disaster hit.

It was a very different experience for a young couple from the United Kingdom who told Mirror who got engaged just five minutes before the quake struck.

The number of injured has not been confirmed by Indonesian authorities but images show patients being treated by medical staff outside of a hospital.

The tremor came a week after a shallow 6.4-magnitude quake hit the island, killing 17 people and damaging hundreds of buildings. That quake was felt in Bali but caused no damage there. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

Indonesia is an archipelago of thousands of islands, which sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot.
