Chicago gun violence leaves 11 dead and 70 wounded after bloody weekend

31 shot, two killed in Sunday morning Chicago shootings

Chicago saw at least 40 people shot - including four fatalities - on Sunday.

"I promise this city that we won't be defeated, we won't be overrun by that small group, that small element that is committing these reckless acts", said Chief Waller.

"We have a heavy heart", Emanuel said at a news conference today.

The gun violence in Chicago has drawn widespread attention, including from President Donald Trump and his lawyer, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Johnson said the police department can not reduce shootings without help from residents identifying the shooters, many of whom are repeat offenders.

Chicago police said 44 people were shot in the city on Sunday within a space of 14 hours, including five who were killed. In addition to a string of shootings, a local teen died at the Lollapalooza music festival, which was held in the city over the weekend.

In one shooting in the Gresham neighborhood, eight people were wounded, police said. Fifty-three people have been shot, ten fatally, since 5 p.m. Friday. "Somebody knows who did it", said Johnson, his voice rising. I hear people holding us accountable all the time. At least 1,700 victims had been shot in Chicago thus far in 2018 prior to the weekend's bloodbath, according to the Tribune's data.

"It is the same people who are pulling the triggers in some of these communities", Johnson said at the press conference.

Officials say lax gun laws in neighboring states allow traffickers to purchase weapons and illegally smuggle them into Chicago.

But the weekend's grim violence underscored that while the city has witnessed a positive trend, several neighborhoods remain volatile. "[Former] Policing genius [Garry] McCarthy can do for Chicago what I did for NYC. He is out of touch with our neighbors in the neediest communities and he is failing them....to death".

After an event announcing an expansion of the Riverwalk, Mayor Rahm Emanuel voiced the need to create more jobs, not just in the central business district, but on the South and West Sides as well. Just four days ago, a group of activists shut down Lake Shore Drive, one of Chicago's main thoroughfares, to protest the economic and racial inequality of gun violence - the city's ritzier, whiter neighborhoods rarely see murders - and call for Emanuel's resignation. "Is it any wonder this past weekend witnessed more than 60 shootings in the city?" he said.

"There are too many guns on the street, too many people with criminal records on the street, and there is a shortage of values about what is acceptable", he said.
