Sudanese FM Confirms Peace Agreement Between Rivals

South Sudan warring parties to sign final peace deal on Sunday

The deal, which paves the way to a final peace accord, was signed in the presence of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and his counterparts from Kenya, Uganda and Djibouti, along with foreign dignitaries.

South Sudan declared independence in 2011, after 22 years of fighting between the rebels and the government in Khartoum.

"No matter how much the world invests in South Sudan, it is incumbent on the people of South Sudan to find lasting peace for their country", President Kenyatta said.

The agreement outlines guidelines on power-sharing and governance, including settling boundary disputes, which will be guided by a Boundary Commission, and provides for an avenue for the people of South Sudan to participate in a referendum if need be to settle those disputes.

"I call on everyone as a leader of South Sudan that this agreement which we have signed today should be the end of the war and the conflict in our country", said President Salva Kiir.

President Salva Kiir and his bitter rival Riek Machar were in neighbouring Sudan to sign the deal, under which the rebel leader is set to return to a unity government as the first of five vice presidents, an AFP correspondent there reported. "Where will I get this?" he added.

Thousands of people have died in the 2013 civil war after troops loyal to the rebel Machar clashed with government troops.

The rival groups have already agreed on a permanent ceasefire and withdrawing of their forces from civilian areas, in talks mediated by Khartoum in series of dialogues hosted by al-Bashir.

"We, however, remain committed to the strategic partnership between our country and theirs and we will not give up", Raila said on his Twitter page.

Other four vice presidents will be appointed from other political groups in addition to 35 ministers and 550 members of parliament.

Sudan helped broker the agreement.

The United Nations said the power-sharing deal was a "significant step".

"As we have done, we shall continue to walk with you from this moment of great expectation to the full implementation of a Revitalized Agreement", President Kenyatta said.
