Remains of young boy found during search of New Mexico compound

Siraj Wahhaj was jailed on a Georgia warrant alleging child abduction

A New Mexico sheriff says the remains of a boy have been found on at a makeshift compound which authorities raided last week in search of a missing Georgia child.

The remains of the boy have not been identified since being found Monday on the "inner portion" of the property, said Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

One of the men, 39-year-old Siraj Wahhaj, was jailed on a Georgia warrant alleging child abduction while the other man, identified only as Lucas Morten, was arrested on suspicion of harbouring a fugitive, Hogrefe said.

Police in the U.S. state of New Mexico have rescued 11 "starving" children in a remote desert compound.

Investigators said that's where they found Siraj Wahhaj living in a filthy trailer in what police described as some sort of makeshift compound in some of the worst conditions they've ever seen.

Police are still are looking for 4-year-old AG Wahhaj, reported missing from Georgia's Clayton County, Hogrefe said.

"We discovered the remains yesterday on Abdul's fourth birthday", Hogrefe said, appearing to fight back tears.

".it had to be a search warrant and a tactical approach for our own safety because we had learned the occupants were most likely heavily armed and considered extremist of the Muslim belief", he said.

It's not clear whether the boy and Siraj Wahhaj are related. His mother said he can not walk and requires constant attention.

The boy's father was among five people arrested after the raid near the border with Colorado.

At a news conference in Taos, Hogrefe described Federal Bureau of Investigation surveillance efforts in recent months that included photographs of the compound and interviews. The group told an Alabama officer, according to the report, they were headed to New Mexico on a camping trip and were later picked up in a truck registered to Morton.

"I had no probable cause to get a search warrant to go onto this property", the sheriff said.

In a January Facebook post, Imam Siraj Wahhaj called for the safe return of his three children and 12 grandchildren.

Police say the search for the missing boy led them Friday to a squalid compound where they found Wahhaj, four other adults and 11 children living in filthy conditions. The minors are in protective custody.

"We all gave the kids our water and what snacks we had-it was the saddest living conditions and poverty I have seen", he added.

But a juvenile court judge eventually issued an arrest warrant to question Wahhaj after he failed to let the mother know where Abdul was.

They said the children, aged one to 15, had no shoes, were wearing rags and "looked like Third World refugees".

The search for Abdul-ghani led authorities to the compound shielded by old tyres, wooden pallets and an earthen wall studded with broken glass.

Sheriff Hogrefe said they worked with other agencies and believed that the missing could still be on the compound. He was found inside the compound with an AR-15 rifle, five 30-round magazines and four loaded pistols.

The raid came after cops received a message believed to have originated inside the compound that stated, "We are starving and need food and water".

"We just figured they were doing what we were doing, getting a piece of land and getting off the grid", said Anderson, who moved to New Mexico from Seattle with his wife seven years ago. Three women who are believed to be the children's mothers were detained and released.

In a federal court filing in 2006, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj claimed he was harassed on his way to and from Morocco by customs agents at JFK Airport in NY because he is "the son of the famous Muslim Imam Siraj Wahhaj".
