Trump declares victory for Republican in very tight OH special election

Crystal ball time Where are we headed politically

With a margin of 50.2%to 49.3%, the Republican Troy Balderson was narrowly ahead of the Democrat Danny O'Connor on Tuesday night in a congressional special election sparked by the resignation of the longtime incumbent Pat Tiberi to take a private sector job.

Donald Trump has claimed victory for the Republican candidate in a hotly-contested OH election, saying his visit to the state helped him come from behind to defeat a tough challenge from his Democrat rival.

Voters on Tuesday are choosing would-be successors to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who can not run again due to term limits, and a GOP nominee to face third-term Democratic Sen.

That narrow edge came in a district anchored in suburban Columbus, Ohio that President Trump won by 11 percentage points in 2016 and hasn't elected a Democrat in 35 years.

Trump took credit for the apparent Republican victory, saying on Twitter that Balderson's campaign made "a big turn for the better" after he campaigned for him in the district on Saturday night. Trump claimed House Democratic leader "Nancy Pelosi controls Danny O'Connor, whoever the hell that is". However, most of the votes in Johnson County, the state's most populous county, had yet to be counted, according to the Kansas elections website.

Recent polling has the race in a statistical tie.

Conservative election analyst Henry Olsen predicted on Hill.TV's "What America's Thinking" on Monday that impeachment hearings against Trump will happen if Democrats take back the House and Senate in November.

Republicans have pumped money into the race in hopes of avoiding another special election embarrassment.

Trump didn't seem anxious about Kobach's prospects.

This special election in the 12congressional district is the last contest until the 2018 midterms, where Democratic enthusiasm is through the roof.

"A loss tonight would be devastating for the GOP - it should not be this close", Republican pollster Frank Luntz said in a tweet.

Should the polarizing Kobach win the primary, some Republican operatives fear he could lose the governorship to Democrats this fall. O'Connor had raised almost $1.5 million and had spent $1.35 million, but had vastly outspent Balderson when it came to television advertising.

The five-way Democratic primary features labor lawyer Brent Welder, who campaigned recently with self-described democratic socialists Vermont Sen.

But political observers said the fact the race was so close in a district that Democrats have not held since Ronald Reagan was president was notable. Bernie Sanders and ascending political star, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a NY congressional candidate.

Senate contests in Missouri and MI will come into focus as two vulnerable Senate Democrats, Missouri's Claire McCaskill and Michigan's Debbie Stabenow, are expected to easily claim their party's nominations. Other top candidates include Sharice Davids, an EMILY's List-endorsed former MMA fighter attempting to become the first Native American lesbian in Congress, and Tom Niermann, a teacher running a more moderate campaign with a long list of local officials' endorsements.

In Missouri, Democratic Sen.
