Boris Johnson faces Tory disciplinary panel over burka comments

Tory peer Sayeeda Warsi has criticised Boris Johnson for his comments about women who wear burkas

Hate crimes against Muslim women in Britain could jump after former foreign minister Boris Johnson likened burqa-wearers to "letter boxes" and "bank robbers", activists said on Thursday.

Johnson, who resigned last month over the Chequers Brexit deal, prompting an outcry from other politicians and Muslim groups with his comments.

However, the panel would be appointed by Chairman of the Conservative Party Brandon Lewis who was one of the first people to demand Johnson to apologise, raising questions of how such an investigation could be fair. The ban was upheld in 2017 by the European Court of Human Rights following a challenge by two Muslim women.

Sources close to Mr Johnson, who is now facing investigation by the party, defended his comments and claimed it was "ridiculous that these views are being attacked".

Asked what she made of the language used by the ex-cabinet minister, the commissioner told the BBC Asian Network: "Some people have clearly found it offensive".

The former foreign secretary compared women who wear the items to "letter boxes" and bank robbers.

Her mother responded to her daughter's remarks by adding, "I can't even understand what she's saying coz her face is covered".

The repercussions could exasperate the party's growing civil war, where the debate over Johnson's comments has developed into a proxy war between Brexiteers and Remainers in the parliamentary party.

Dominic Grieve has said he'll quit the Conservative party if Boris Johnson becomes leader.

Amid calls to apologise for his remarks, a former USA diplomat, and foreign policy adviser, Jim Jatras, has claimed President Donald Trump would spark similar fury if he made similar remarks.

Mr Johnson will be given the opportunity to make a statement providing "any evidence or details that will help to establish their position".

Mr Johnson, who is holidaying overseas, has made no response to demands for an apology.

The assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, Miqdaad Versi, said Mr Johnson was "pandering to the far-right", while Labour MP David Lammy branded him a "pound-shop Donald Trump". "Such crass commentary should have no place in our political discourse".

Taking to Twitter, the Jaanan actress emphasized a woman's right to wear whatever she feels comfortable in.
