Diego Godin rejects Manchester United deadline day approach

Diego Godin

The Red Devils have been scouring the market for a new defensive addition, but so far have failed to make any progress in their pursuit.

The 32-year-old has been one of the best central defenders in world football since joining Atletico from Villarreal in 2010 and he was once again a star performer for Uruguay at the World Cup this summer.

Sky Sports News broke that news about United's interest in Godin, but now Sky journalist Kaveh Solhekol has tweeted out stating that Atletico rejected the approach - seemingly nearly instantly.

Leicester City are said to want a world record fee for Harry Maguire, Tottenham want around £50m for Toby Alderweireld, who has one year left on his deal, and Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng has reportedly said he has no interest in moving to Manchester.

The Uruguayan centre-half would have been able to move for just £17.5 million this summer and it's easy to see why Jose Mourinho viewed him as a short-term solution to the problem in the heart of the Red Devils' back four. It is understood that the defender is likely to sign a new contract with Los Rojiblancos instead.

The report claims United also offered to double Godin's wages to £8.1m-per-season after tax but unfortunately they have not been given any encouragement that a deal can be done before today's 5pm deadline. The defender has won La Liga in 2013-14 and Europa League on two occasions with Atletico Madrid.
