Washington farmers worry about Chinese tariffs

U.S.-China trade war update Motorcycles and railway cars are among the $16 billion in items U.S. is targeting next

China's commerce ministry has announced that it will start imposing 25 percent import duties targeting $US16 billion ($NZ17.779bn) worth of USA goods.

August 7: The US announces that the second tranche of tariffs, which will hit $16 billion worth of Chinese goods, will go into effect on August 23.

China responded by promising to hit $60 billion worth of USA goods coming into the country with tariffs.

China has repeatedly warned it will strike back against any further punitive measures by Trump, saying the United States is threatening the global free trade order with its protectionism.

The 279 items that will be hit with tariffs at the end of August are mostly industrial goods such as tractors, plastic tubes, and measurement equipment like speedometers.

USA tariffs on Chinese goods are set to hit $50 billion from August 23.

In March 2018, the USTR had released the findings of its "exhaustive" Section 301 investigation that found China's acts, policies and practices related to technology transfer, intellectual property, and innovation are "unreasonable and discriminatory and burden United States commerce".

The US has said the tariffs are meant to penalise China for "unfair" trade practices, such as rules that compel companies in certain sectors to take on local partners if they want to do business in the country.

For its part, China has threatened to ratchet up the tit-for-tat trade war by slapping tariffs on another $60bn of American imports.

Washington imposed tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese products on July 6.

The Trump administration ramped up the pressure for trade concessions from Beijing last week by proposing a higher 25 percent tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports. And Chinese regulators last month barred Qualcomm, a US telecom leader, from completing its $44 billion acquisition of Netherlands-based NXP, which would have made it a more formidable competitor for Chinese companies.

China deprives US companies of the ability to set market-based terms in licensing and other technology-related negotiations.

March 1: President Donald Trump announcestariffs on all imports of steel and aluminum, including metals from China.

China fired back warning it would impose duties on $60 billion in United States goods. "They are aimed at fellow Americans", the economist said. It would take a few more weeks to revise the list and make programming changes at U.S. Customs and Border Protection to begin collecting the duties.
