Witness recounts how Manafort lied to get bank loans

In testimony Tuesday Rick Gates detailed various schemes he engaged in while working for Paul Manafort

There have been exceptions, like when Gates said that he might have also embezzled from the Trump inauguration committee by inflating his expenses, and when he testified about how Manafort reached out to talk about securing a banker who loaned him money tickets to the inauguration and potentially a position in the administration.

IRS agent Michael Welch said the total includes foreign wire transfers to USA vendors like landscapers and clothiers, wire transfers to buy property, and income reclassified as loans.

"I think Gates was a very poor witness".

"That's really beyond the pale for the judge", Litman said of the exchange, which took place during cross-examination, in front of the jury.

A court filing was submitted on Thursday to remind Ellis that he previously allowed Welch to attend the trial, and the prosecution team also asked him to tell the jury he was wrong to accuse the government of improper conduct.

Manafort is facing another trial in Washington, D.C., later this year on other charges brought against him by Mueller, including obstructing justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice and illegal foreign lobbying.

"I think he has to keep hammering at the point that Gates is not a credible witness and he can't be believed", he said.

Gates said he falsely labeled hundreds of thousands of dollars in income as loans to reduce Manafort's tax liability.

Another witness, Citizens Bank Vice President Peggy Miceli, said Manafort would not have gotten the $3.4 million loan if the bank had known it was a rental property.

Mr Downing forced Gates to admit he had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort by filing bogus personal expenses claims and that he had engaged in an extramarital affair and kept an apartment in London for that objective.

Gates' earlier testimony on Tuesday, meanwhile, centered on how Ukrainian businessmen paid Manafort for his consultancy work.

Gates, 46, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government as it prosecutes Manafort for allegedly evading U.S. taxes on tens of millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did together in Ukraine from 2006 to 2014. These questions about Gates' extramarital tryst also carried faint echoes of Trump, coming less than a month after the release of a tape in which Trump can be heard discussing buying the rights to the story of a woman who claimed to have had an affair with him.

"The Ukrainians", Gates said, adding a layer to his statement Tuesday that he had stolen "Mr. Manafort's money".

In an email shown to the jury, Manafort, the former campaign chairman for President Donald Trump, wrote to Gates on November 24, 2016, "We need to discuss Steve Calk for Sec of Army".

While some of the documents shown in court Wednesday listed Manafort's and Gates' names, others showed how a Cypriot law firm run by "Dr. K", Kypros Chrysostomides, oversaw Manafort's foreign accounts.

The judge's comments were in response to a written filing by prosecutors arguing that Ellis should instruct the jury that he made an error in admonishing them during the Wednesday testimony of IRS agent Michael Welch.

"Yes, because I'm here to tell the truth and take responsibility for my actions", Gates replied.

But on Wednesday, Manafort attorney Kevin Downing seemed to accuse Gates of having affairs with multiple individuals, asking Gates whether he disclosed four affairs to the special counsel's office.

Prosecutors called Morgan Magionos, an Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant, as the next witness to testify.

Gates, a former business partner of Manafort, testified that he began working with Manafort directly in October 2006, and the pair conspired between 2008 and 2015.

So far, the trial has in large part steered clear of direct allegations about the Trump campaign.

During his testimony Monday, Gates admitted he had embezzled money from Manafort by creating false expense reports on his own behalf.

She reached out to Manafort and Gates repeatedly for clarity, and they assured the bank several times that their documents were correct.

After Gates testified that Manafort was "pretty good about knowing" where his money was, Ellis couldn't suppress a quip that appeared to call into question Gates' testimony.
