José Mourinho takes aim at Manchester United’s board

Jose Mourinho

A 2-1 victory on Friday night, built around a stirring performance and an early penalty from World Cup victor Pogba as well as Luke Shaw's first career goal, might have been cause for good cheer, but Mourinho chose the occasion to revisit his concerns over the club's recent business.

"I think football is changing and managers should be called head coaches".

"Of course, it will be a hard season for everybody".

After sealing deals for Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant by early July, last season's Premier League runners-up were unable to add further despite the Portuguese's explicit desire to bring in two more players. I enjoy the last season, the fight to finish where we finished and to manage the best position in five or six years.

"We don't have many solutions and we want to go with everything we have".

Mourinho believes United should be content with a win over a side who spent more money than them in the close season. I had my plans for many months and I find myself with the market closed in a situation I did not think I would be in.

Despite aiming his ire at the United board, Mourinho did have some positive things to say about Paul Pogba, who was captain for the night, scored and put in a man-of-the-match performance after a preseason spanning four days and returning to Carrington on Monday. It was a good match with three good teams, in my opinion. Pogba responded with a strong all-round performance, as well as scoring the opening goal after what I have to say was a very odd run-up for his penalty.

Luke made one mistake - towards the end of the game when he was caught in possession inside his own area by Vardy - but he will not need to be told about it.

Shaw had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the summer but the full-back got himself in the shape of his life in preseason in an attempt to prove his doubters wrong.

Shaw's first touch from a Sanchez cross took a fortuitous bounce around Leicester's Ricardo Pereira, and the former Southampton defender pounced and fired a shot past Kasper Schmeichel to score.

As I was saying on BBC Radio 5 live on Friday, United have a very strong squad.

As ESPN's Rob Dawson says: "Mourinho and Pogba's frosty relationship is a puzzle Manchester United must solve".
