It was a rare instance of gun violence in the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

New Brunswick had only three homicide shootings in 2016, according to Statistics Canada.

Sara Burns, 43, had wanted to be a police officer for a long time.

The shootings took place on Brookside Drive, a leafy thoroughfare on the city's north side.

"This is the first time I've even heard of any serious crime or violent crime in this city", he said.

Outside the scene, New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant urged the public to be patient in waiting for answers. "I called 911 and they came and checked on them and they were shot", he said. Residents said they heard as many as 20 gunshots following a confrontation that prompted police to initially cordon off a large section of the city with emergency vehicles and order residents to remain inside their homes and businesses.

The province also dealt with a multiple shooting June 4, 2014, when five RCMP officers were shot in Moncton.
